This is movie is absolutely made by Wanda Sykes. Without her one-liners, it wouldn't be half as good. And without the five minutes near the end with Elaine Stritch, it would have been even worse. But with those two, it wasn't bad.
Jennifer Lopez plays Charlie, a perpetually undecisive, dog-walker and doctor's office receptionist, who meets Kevin (Michael Vartan) several times in a couple of days. Unfortunately, his mother (Jane Fonda) isn't keen about the idea of her talented son being taken away from her by this woman who is so obviously beneath her.
That pretty well sums it up. The rest is just filler. If you have seen any movies in the last couple decades you can pretty well guess what happens next, as well as the outcome. There isn't anything new here, but it is pretty entertaining to watch, mostly because of Wanda Sykes' comments on Kevin's mother's actions.
While hard to believe, she actually hires an actor to be her doctor, and he prescribes her medication that she needs to take - the stress of her only son getting married is just too much. So Kevin offers to have her come live with them. But he's going on a business trip, so that leaves Charlie to take care of her.
That's when mother and daughter-to-be really get it on, and then Charlie finds out that the "pills" are really Vitamin C. So she replaces them with real pills, which knock her future mother-in-law out, right in the night's dinner. She leaves her there until the next morning. Nicely played!
Of course it all works out as Kevin comes home, and things wrap up before the credits roll.
Rated PG-13 for sex references and language. Most of this is for language, and most of that comes from the older ladies. Most of it is pretty funny too, I have to admit. But it's not for the kids. They probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway.
