Sea of Love (1989) Review

I've always liked Al Pacino, even if I can't always figure out why. I mean let's face it - it isn't as if he possesses the most versatile acting range in the world. His characters are generally about the same from movie to movie.

Still, they are certainly entertaining characters, and perhaps that is why I enjoy watching him. In this case, he is teamed with John Goodman as the two try to catch someone who is killing men who take out personal ads.

Specifically, it seems that someone is reading the personal ads and killing men who write poems to attract women. This being 1989, the assumption, of course, is that it is a woman.

So these two take out their own ad and start going on dates. One after another the women are eliminated, and then Pacino meets a woman who he'd like to actually date. He makes the seemingly fatal mistake of not getting her prints, and of course it seems as if she is going to be the killer.

I won't spoil the ending by saying if she is indeed the killer, but there are a few twists and turns to leave a bit of surprise at the ending. The only problem with the movie is that it moves a bit slowly, but all in all it isn't a bad one. Perhaps not great, but definitely good.

Rated R for nudity and a strong sexual theme and some violence. There's actually not as much sex as you would expect from an erotic thriller, but it's still a bit much if you're planing on a family night.

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have something directly to do with movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.
