Are We There Yet? (2005) Review

Who would expect a movie with Ice Cube to be a family movie? Is this the same guy? As it turns out, it is. And there is certainly some edge to his character, but he turns it out.

His character is a sports collector, with all sorts of memorabilia, including a bobblehead doll of Satchel Paige who tries to talk him out of one thing or another (and often seems to get him into more trouble). In order to get in good with a new girl, he agrees to bring her kids to meet her. Perhaps not the best idea.

What results is just a mess. The kids don't want him (or anyone, really) to be with his mom. In fact, they don't want a new dad, and they try to make his life miserable, mostly taken out on his brand new car, usually in gross ways involving large amounts of bodily fluids - and in one case, fire.

While I don't think that too many people would entrust their kids to a stranger, the rest isn't so bad, and the mom is concerned that her kids get to her - but why she thought that a virtual stranger should be trusted with that job in the first place I'm not too sure.

But in the end, as these things usually do, it all turns out as you would expect and all is happy with the world. It's really a pretty enjoyable movie, though perhaps not the most high-brow humor you will find.

Rated PG for language and rude humor.

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have something directly to do with movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.
