Before Denzel Washington became a household name he starred in this film about an up-and-coming LA district attorney who is being haunted by a criminal who he put away a number of years before (and who, coincidentally, started his rise up the political ladder).
The criminal, Earl Talbott Blake (John Lithgow), recently escaped from prison, and in a brilliant move, shot one of his escape buddies and burned the body to pass him off as himself, so that he could operate under-the radar. What better than to have people think you are dead?
In actuality, Blake isn't dead, however, and he's sneaking around LA, killing off people and setting things up to make his old friend take a fall to make up for all the years he spent in prison. Once the trap is set, it's sprung on him,by actually kidnapping him and making a video that will make the DA look like he has some very troubling habits.
This doesn't sit well with the authorities, but it also doesn't sit well with his wife, who doesn't like that little blonde girl who is in bed with him and feeding him the drugs that show up on the blood test. And despite what he says, it doesn't seem like he is fighting all that hard.
Now there isn't much surprise who wins in the end, but it's still a fun romp to see how low things will go and just what has to happen before a man will snap and fight back to protect what is his.
Rated R for drug use, language, nudity, sex and violence.
