Martin Lawrence has had an interesting road, going from a bit of the wild side to this relatively tame film that's perhaps even a little too sappy even for the Disney crowd.
Here he plays Coach Roy McCormick, who seems to be famous for nothing much more than having a lot of endorsement deals, but apparently once upon a time he was actually a good basketball coach. Now he just throws tantrums, and his latest one has nearly cost him his lucrative lifestyle.
Luckily his agent, perhaps appropriately named Fink (Breckin Meyer) finds a loophole that says he must be put on probation and given another chance. Unfortunately it doesn't mean with his old job, and that's when the kids step in and ask him to coach their middle school.
Roy being Roy, however, he mostly sits around trying to do as little as possible. That is, until a woman enters the picture. At that point, however, he gets up and starts going - not least of all because she is the mother of one of the kids on the team. But at least he starts going, and gets those kids motivated.
At that point, the rest of the movie is pretty much what you'd expect, but it is cute, and it's something the whole family can enjoy.
Rated PG for mild language and thematic elements.
