Surviving Christmas (2004) Review

Drew (Ben Affleck) is a successful young man who is ready to commit to his girlfriend, but before she gets married she just must meet his family.

The only problem is that he has no family. So he sets out to find one the only way he knows how. He rents one.

James Gandolfini does a wonderful job of playing the father of this dysfunctional family, and we find out along the way that he and his wife are having marital problems.

This is all compounded by the fact that Drew is now living with them and can't quite decide between their daughter (Christina Applegate, who does a fair job) and his girlfriend, who wanted Drew to have a family in the first place. Not to mention the fact that the hired grandfather has the hots for his "daughter", something that's probably improper in most families.

Hilarity ensues throughout, mostly through misunderstandings and inappropriate "family" moments.

Rated PG-13 for sexual content, language and a brief drug reference.

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have something directly to do with movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.
