American Pie Presents Band Camp (2005) Review

Matt Stifler Tad Hilgenbrink wants to be just like his big brother. This is, presumably, the same character played by Eli Marienthal in American Pie 2 - that character was just named "Stifler's Brother".

In any case, he can't get big brother Steve to give him the time of day. So he figures that what he can do is make enough noise to get him to notice him in other ways. He decides to sabotage the school band that's getting ready to play during some sort of graduation ceremony.

Unfortunately, what happens is that not only does he ruin the ceremony, but he exposes himself to the entire crowd, and he gets himself in so much trouble that he gets sent to the one place that no Stifler should ever want to end up. In fact, it's the one place that no one would want any Stifler to be. He gets sent to Band Camp.

Like big brother Steve in American Wedding, Matt Stifler starts off too strong. It's not that I have a problem with language. It's really not that big of an issue. But too much is just too much. At least half of it could have been eliminated with little to no effect on the movie.

After the first 30 minutes or so, he calms down and then the movie does as well. Stifler starts to settle into Band Camp, and that's when he starts to implement his idea. He's trying to make a movie called Bandeez Gone Wild. The only real problem he has is that he happens to like one of them. Sure, he teases Elyse (Arielle Kebbel), especially about her body, but that's just his way of expressing himself when he doesn't know how to say that he really feels something more for her.

Eventually he actually starts to care, not only for Elyse, but for the other band geeks, and towards the end of his stay at Band Camp, he wants to help them pull out a win - but he puts the Ipecac (to induce vomiting) into the drink that is ingested by his own band, which produces some rather nasty results, and he goes right back down to the bottom of the ladder. He sinks even lower when they find his home videos.

So this Stifler has no videos, no friends, and he has to really put something special together to make it up to Elyse, which he does.

I have to say that this is actually one of the better movies in the series. I'd definitely put it above the third one, and probably on par with the second one. Well worth a view if you have the time. And the stomach. There's not a lot in common with the first three films (just the place names, Mr. Levenstein and The Shermanator), but it's still not bad.

Rated R for sexual content/nudity, crude humor and language.

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have something directly to do with movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.

Thanks for visiting, enjoy your stay, and come back often..
