At the site of a lavish celebratory party, thrown by a Japanese company wanting to celebrate their purchase of a US company, the mood turns decidedly unhappy when someone turns up dead on the boardroom table. The fact that it’s a young woman, who is most assuredly not Japanese, is probably not a good sign.
Detective Webster Smith (Wesley Snipes) is called in to investigate, and quickly teamed up with Captain John Connor (Sean Connery). This partner arrangement, where a younger. more inexperienced investigator, would be paired with a wiser, more seasoned man, is quite common for the Japanese. Apparently.
Unfortunately, Webb isn’t too happy about either his new partner or the fact that the Japanese don’t want their party to be disturbed. But life is about to get a lot more interesting for him.

Everyone knows that they need someone, and this is a film that attempts to chronicle the process of finding someone for several twenty-somethings in Seattle during the nineties.
Janet (Bridget Fonda) just wants someone to say gesundheit when she sneezes, but on-and-off-again boyfriend Cliff (Matt Dillon) is more concerned about his band than Janet (Cliff also serves as something of a narrator).

Adam Sandler generally isn’t the first actor you think of when it comes to dramatic performances, and this isn’t really a dramatic role, but he did a pretty decent job. Sure, there are moments. There are references to his other films, whether it’s the inclusion of his buddies or names or what-have-you. But there are also moments where he and Drew Barrymore really do fine job of making things work.
Henry Roth (Sandler) is something of a serial liar. He works at the aquarium, but you wouldn’t know it if you were to happen across him in a bar. He tells women that he works for the CIA – or just about any other secret organization – in order to avoid having to call them. He only dates tourists, so that they will leave at the end of their trip and he doesn’t have to see them again. Ever. But that changes when he meets Lucy (Barrymore) one morning at breakfast.
