This is an interesting movie. On one hand, I have no doubt that it will likely end up in the stable of films that are rerun endlessly at this time of year, simply because it’s a pretty decent tale, and that’s what films like this do at this time of year. But on the other, it’s rather creepy. The animation is good, and if it were ten years ago, I’m sure we would all be amazed at how lifelike the characters are. Let’s face it – it isn’t ten years ago.
While there are some pretty amazing reproductions of life here, they just don’t quite make the final step. The hair doesn’t move. It’s like a plastic wig. And while the eyes are okay, the mouth is just a bottomless pit into oblivion. Ignore those things and you’re okay. Younger kids might be able to do so, but some will undoubtedly be spooked by these aspects of the film.

Robin Williams is back on the big screen in this story about a family on what might be their last leg (and that’s before they start their trip).
What he has told them is that he’s canceled their trip to Hawaii so that they could spend some time together in an RV, going across the country in order to get to know each other again. What he hasn’t told them is that he has to be at the other end of the trip in a few days for a presentation, and this gives him time to put it together.

This movie was a bit odd in that it was enjoyable from a family perspective – that is to say the kids enjoyed it and it wasn’t too bad for them to watch it – but it didn’t really fit together all that well. It starts off well enough, with Will Ferrell falling short of his father’s expectations (played well by Robert Duvall).
And the laughs start in right away, but then he starts falling into a bit of a funk as his son is benched on the dad’s championship team. You know where it’s going, and that isn’t a big deal, really, but it’s how it gets there that leaves you wanting a bit. It’s no surprise that the dad uses the ringers to get the team all the way to the finals. It’s no surprise that he comes around in the end and the team pulls together to win.
