Wild Hogs

The Wild Hogs of the title aren’t exactly a biker gang. They just pretend to be one on weekends and for the occasional ride during the week. But Doug (Tim Allen) and his crew have all hit something of a milestone. Actually, it’s a mid-life crisis. Just don’t tell them that.

So one day on their ride they decide that they are ready to take a real ride. A cross-country ride. And what a ride it will be, with the wind in their hair (or what hair they have left, at any rate) and a real chance at freedom. Or at least as close as they are probably going to get at any point in the near future.

Con Air

Just as Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) comes home to visit his wife, he is met by a few less-than-upstanding citizens who want to cause trouble. Unfortunately for them, Poe is an Army Ranger, which means that they probably aren’t in the best position when it comes to a fight.

So when they decide to ambush him outside the bar, Poe gets the best of them. But when all is said and done, and one of them ends up dead on the ground, it is Poe who gets the short end of the stick. All he was doing was protecting his wife, but since he is trained as a deadly weapon, he ends up in prison.

Sideways

As Jack (Thomas Haden Church) approaches his wedding date, he has just one plan: To spend a week in wine country with his friend Miles (Paul Giamatti).

There they will, of course, drink wine. They will play golf. And there the plans diverge. That’s about all that Miles has planned, except perhaps for a few good meals. But Jack also plans to make sure he has a few last rolls in the hay, to get it out of his system before he gets married. Miles probably wouldn’t approve.

The Dukes of Hazzard

You might think that The Dukes of Hazzard return in this big screen fiasco, but you’d be wrong. About the only thing that remains the same between this movie and the original The Dukes of Hazzard is the name, the name of the players and the General Lee.

The Duke boys do shoot those arrows that explode when they hit something, and the place names are the same.

Oh, and you could almost count Willie Nelson, because he used to play with Waylon Jennings. Willie plays the new Uncle Jesse, and Waylon used be The Balladeer. But that’s about as close as it gets, and that’s also the end of the comparison. Sad, really.

Are We There Yet?

Who would expect a movie with Ice Cube to be a family movie? Is this the same guy? As it turns out, it is. And there is certainly some edge to his character, but he turns it out.

His character is a sports collector, with all sorts of memorabilia, including a bobblehead doll of Satchel Paige who tries to talk him out of one thing or another (and often seems to get him into more trouble). In order to get in good with a new girl, he agrees to bring her kids to meet her. Perhaps not the best idea.

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have anything to do directly with the movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars, and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.

Thanks for visiting, enjoy your stay, and come back often.
