Hitch

I have enjoyed Will Smith for quite a while. He’s had a few flubs, such as Wild, Wild West, but generally even in those, he can be entertaining to watch.

This time around, Smith plays Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, matchmaker extraordinaire. He doesn’t advertise, and won’t even talk to you if your plan is just to get the girl for one night. For Hitch, it’s all about the long ball.

Prime

Things aren’t going well for Rafi (Uma Thurman). She’s just come out of a relationship, and now she’s met a wonderful new guy, but it turns out he’s younger than she is. A lot younger than she is. Fourteen years, to be exact.

To make matters worse, she is a career woman, and he isn’t much for a career. She tries to get him to paint more, but he just doesn’t know what he wants to do yet. He does seem to love her though, at least that is genuine. But when it turns out that her therapist is his mother, maybe it would just be easier to find someone else.

In Good Company

Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) should be living the good life. He’s working as the head of ad sales for a major sports magazine and getting ready to coast into the best years of his life.

Unfortunately, the magazine has just become the part of a larger company in a corporate takeover, and he’s been “demoted” (which has to be better than being “downsized”) in the shakeup. To make matters worse, his new boss Carter Duryea (Topher Grace) is half his age and thinks he knows everything. He is about to find out that he doesn’t.

War of the Worlds

This retelling of the 1953 classic has a big budget and a lot of computer effects, and in general does a very good job. Tom Cruise may not be my first choice for an action hero, but he doesn’t do too badly here. I think that’s probably because the tale is told by what’s happening around him and it doesn’t depend too much on what he’s doing.

Ray Ferrier (Cruise) is a New Jersey mechanic who seems to be fighting with life. His wife has moved on and his kids aren’t too far from doing the same. But this weekend they are staying with him, so perhaps something will change. When Ray tries to get his son Robbie Justin Chatwin to play a game of catch, the ball goes through the window instead. I guess it won’t be this weekend after all.

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have anything to do directly with the movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars, and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.

Thanks for visiting, enjoy your stay, and come back often.
