This movie, based on the Firefly series, surrounds a psychic named River, who was imprisoned as the alliance tried to suppress her knowledge of certain events. Unfortunately her brother walked into the facility and broke her out. Along the way, they meet up with the crew of Serenity, who are naturally not friendly with the authorities, and thus begins the adventure.

The band of brigands aboard Serenity have no idea what secret River is holding, nor do they know what secret she herself is hiding – mostly because she doesn’t seem to know. What they do know is that they don’t really like the people she’s hiding from, so they don’t have a problem keeping River away from the people who want her, and that’s about all that matters.

Unfortunately, the alliance hires a mercenary to bring River back, as it turns out that the secret she is protecting is a might big one, and that in turn means that the crew of Serenity needs to make a choice. In the end, all of their normal hiding places are compromised, and most – if not all – of their friends end up paying the ultimate price, so they end up fighting to help bring the alliance to justice, which is about what you’d expect. Along the way, it ends up being a good fight.

About the only downfall is that some of the dialect is a bit off-the-wall, but most of it isn’t too bad.

More than once I caught myself trying to figure out what they just said, which makes things a bit more difficult to follow than they should have been. If I had been a regular watcher of Firefly, that might not have been the case. The good news is that things moved well, and the action was good all around. A very enjoyable movie, with the exception of being a bit out-of-reach for those who aren’t fans of the series or solid science fiction fans. If you are more of a casual movie watcher, this probably isn’t going to be your cup of tea.

Rated PG-13 for violence, but mostly it’s held at a comic level, and there really isn’t a whole lot of gore – just a lot of blasting and the like, so keep that in mind.
