This followup to the 1992 movie isn’t that bad. Tony Todd returns as the excellent Candyman, and we learn more about his history.

Sure, we already knew that if you look in a mirror and call his name five times, you’ll soon be visited by him, and he’ll be only too happy to split you from groin to gullet – not a pleasant experience.

In this sequel, a young woman is trying to find out what is happening with her brother, who himself is trying to figure out what happened to their father. Luckily it’s not all as complicated as that sounds.

In the process, they figure out that their mother has been hiding things from them – namely that their ancestor was none other than the Candyman himself. In fact, it turns out that the young lady is carrying a child that the Candyman wants for his own.

The result is a romp through the streets of New Orleans, and a finish that brings the Candyman into the real world, and then his ultimate destruction. Of course, in the world of the horror film, no destruction should ever be considered final.

Rated R for violence and gore, and for some sexuality and language.

Average Joe’s gym, owned by regular guy Peter La Fleur Vince Vaughn, suddenly needs $50,000 to pay off their mortgage. It looks like the only way there is through a dodgeball tournament, so they put together a rag-tag team and sign up. The rest of the movie is, well, pretty predictable, though it takes a roundabout way to get there.

The most notable speed bump on the way is through White Goodman (Ben Stiller), owner of the competing gym that wants to buy Average Joe’s (and coincidentally, the reigning dodgeball champs).

After getting through a nail-biter in the regional qualifier where they lost to a girl scout troop (later disqualified for steroid use), Average Joe’s makes it into the tournament after all, though to be fair, they aren’t really very good at all.

When they arrive in Las Vegas for the big show, they end up with luggage from another convention, and have to play their first game in leather and let me just say that it sure looks uncomfortable. But they win, and then they keep winning.

The best part is the commentary during the games between Jason Bateman and Gary Cole for ESPN 8 “The Ocho”. Some of their lines are great.

But just before the big finale, against White and his team, their coach dies, and it looks like they might not make it after all. Naturally, that doesn’t happen, and indeed Peter lays a sizable bet on his team, so that when they do win, he actually ends up buying out White’s gym as well, so that people can come over to either gym. White ends up gaining a lot of weight sitting in front of the television.

I rarely like Vince Vaughn, and in fact I rarely like movies that even have Vince Vaughn in them. But this production was cute. Perhaps even more surprisingly because I don’t really like Ben Stiller either.

Rated PG-13 for rude and sexual humor, and language. Frankly, it’s mostly because of a sprinkling of adult language, but when compared to other offerings, it’s not all that bad. It may not be for you, but there’s a lot worse out there, that’s for sure.
