Jonathan Parker (Peter Berg) is your typical high school athlete, who is out trying to impress his girlfriend, Alison (Camille Cooper). But for some reason he can’t seem to keep things straight whenever she’s around, and one day he slams into the goal post, and it looks like he gives himself a concussion. That’s not the worst part, though, because that night he has a nightmare where he sees his brother, sister and mother killed by a serial killer who is stalking the city.

When he tries to convince his father (the police chief) about what he saw, his dad doesn’t want to hear about it. But when his family turns up dead, and he somehow knows the details, suddenly they are very interested – but not in a casual sense. They want to know just how he came to know what he does. That’s when things get a little more interesting. Unfortunately, Jonathan isn’t interested in just telling them. He wants to help catch this guy.

Naturally, they let him go on a raid to bring the psycho in, but it doesn’t work out all that well. Despite the fact that several police officers are killed in the process, and a large man with a limp can somehow get away, Jonathan and his dad get out alive. But then he’s really supposed to stay out of things. Only by then the killer knows that he’s inside his head, and now he can’t get out, because the killer knows it was him, and he leaves him a calling card in the form of killing Alison.

Jonathan is determined to get the guy, so he gets one of his teammates to help him go into his lunatic trance and they track him down to a building downtown and manage to thwart a killing, but just before they can get him, Jonathan’s dad and some more police show up. The chase is on! Across buildings (that guy with a bum leg can really move!) and everything, somehow this high school kid can put up a fight and they manage to corral the killer. Before you know it, he’s being put to death. Movie justice is fast.

Jonathan argues that he deserves to be at the execution, and somehow convinces his dad that he’s right, so they go. But before this can happen, Horace Pinker (that’s the killer, played by Mitch Pileggi) hooks up a television and gives himself some sort of strange electrical powers.

That means that once he’s dead he can take over other people by jumping into them with his shocker-power. So the next three hours (it seems) are spent with him staying one step ahead of Jonathan and the authorities beginning to think that Jonathan is the actual killer. In the end, Pinker transfers himself to a television antenna and into an actual set, and somehow Jonathan uses his dead girlfriend’s necklace to get into the set too, and he grabs a remote to switch channels (similar to Stay Tuned), and he finally traps Pinker in his family’s house just as his football buddies cut the power to the town.

All in all a very strange ending indeed, but I guess we won’t be seeing a sequel to this low-budget film anytime soon. At least, I hope not. It really got painful towards the end.

Rated R for language and violence.

This movie is widely credited as being the film that brought some fun back to the horror, Scream is easily one of the more enjoyable romps you can enjoy if you’re looking for something in the genre.

Starting with the mysterious death of Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) as she is home alone one night and receives a strange phone call, right up through the end, horror master Wes Craven will keep you guessing throughout.

As the story unfolds, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is at the center of it all, for it is widely believed that the man who murdered her mother has come back to seek his revenge – on her.

There to tell the tale is television reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), who isn’t looked kindly upon by much of anyone because of her desire to get the story above all else – mostly everyone’s feelings.

One by one, the deaths continue to mount and the mystery deepens, without anyone getting any closer to really finding the identity of the killer. It all comes to a resounding climax when those who remain at the end do what kids do – they throw a party and watch some scary movies to try and forget their troubles. Unfortunately for them, it just gives the killer a good place to kill a number of them all at once.

While the length is probably a bit more than your typical slasher film, it’s not really noticeable because it keeps moving throughout and before you know it, the movie is over – but in a way that will leave things wide open for a sequel (there were actually two).

Rated R for strong graphic horror violence and gore, and for language.

When Lisa (Rachel McAdams) heads to the airport to return to Miami, she gets a call from her hotel. It turns out that night clerk Cynthia has an emergency on her hands – a regular couple seems to be there and she can’t find her reservation. Luckily, Lisa is one of those rare souls who can handle emergencies like this, and even though she’s late for her flight and in a cab on a cell phone, she walks Cynthia through handling things without a hitch.

Unfortunately when she gets to the airport, she finds out that her flights has been delayed, and it looks like she’ll be on the red eye back to Miami. That’s when a rather boisterous passenger gets upset about having to wait in line while others (who are about to miss their flights) get to go ahead of him. That’s host most of us would act – but Lisa takes it in stride and tries to help out the overwhelmed customer service people. She’s just that kind of person.

There is even another passenger behind her who helps out, and the whole situation is rapidly defused. The guy behind her even offers to buy her some nachos at a great restaurant across form their gate, because it turns out that they are on the same flight. She politely declines, and proceeds to make some busywork until it’s time to leave. But when she gets to the gate, she sees him sitting next to an empty chair and sits down to talk.

When she boards the plane, it turns out that they are seated next to one another, and they strike up yet another conversation, but as they take off her fear of flying surfaces, and he keeps her talking about her family in order to distract her mind so she doesn’t think about the turbulence of the plane, and she thanks him. That’s when things take a decidedly different turn. It seems that he is sitting next to her for a reason – he needs Lisa to call her hotel and have a VIP moved to a particular suite, because he has business to conduct. What’s more, if she doesn’t, her father will be killed by someone sitting outside his house right this minute.

Lisa’s first reaction is how any of us would react – how could this be happening? But slowly she comes to terms with it, and tries to escape – by writing notes and signaling stewardesses. Eventually, however, she has to call her hotel and make the change. As the plane lands, however, she had managed to sneak a ball point pen from another passenger, and she jabs it into the throat of her tormentor, and she grabs his cell phone and takes off into the terminal.

As she tries to get to her father and warn him, her seatmate gives pursuit. Lisa does manage to warn the VIP, just in time to get him and his family to safety as a rocket, fired from a fishing boat, slams into the top floors of the hotel. Meanwhile, she gets to her father’s house and is able to save him from the hit man outside, but then the guy from the plane shows up in a thrilling climax. Naturally, everyone is safe and Lisa saves the day, but it is quite an exciting ride.

Keep your eyes out for Keefe’s head of security – that’s none other than Colby Donaldson of Survivor fame.

Rated PG-13 for some intense sequences of violence, and language.
