Joe Dirt

Joe Dirt (David Spade) is perhaps your average janitor, if you consider your average janitor to have a mullet wig that was put on him as a boy to cover a hole in his head, and now it’s been fused into the skull when the bones finally grew together, and a life so bad that he can do little about it but look at the bright side of life. If he didn’t, he would probably have given up long ago.

So one day when his employer, Zander Kelly (Dennis Miller) comes across him cleaning the lobby and decides to put him on the show, the whole world gets to hear about the adventures of Joe Dirt and just how he got to where he is today. Perhaps the strangest thing of all is that by the end of the story, what started as poking some fun at the guy who didn’t fit turns into a story of triumph.

Alan and Wendy have some marriage issues. Though they are never exactly explained, the need to have regularity makes it seem like they are trying to get pregnant. However, they have two kids already, and later dialogue makes it seem like they are instead simply trying to rekindle a spark. The sort of language that they use isn’t likely to do it (a fact which is pointed out in the movie). So what should they try next? Perhaps pick up a swinger magazine and answer someone’s ad!

No, that won’t do. It’s not going to help meeting a stranger for sex. Let’s look through our phone book and invite them over instead. No, it might be strange at work the next day. Instead, let’s just write our own ad and put it in the magazine and see what sort of responses we get. Yes, let’s do that!

In The Client, Brad Renfro burst onto the scene with quite a good performance. I mean he was only 12, and he could have been excused for just about anything. In reality he did well. The years haven’t been particularly kind to his acting career.

Teaming up with Nick Stahl (post-Sunset Strip, pre-Carnivale), they wander through South Florida in this teen movie where Bobby (played by Stahl) regularly beats up on everyone, but most notably “best friend” Marty (played by Renfro).

About Celluloid Heroes

Welcome to Celluloid Heroes! Here you will find movie reviews of all shapes and sizes. No stone is left unturned, and that is meant quite literally. In fact, you are probably quite unlikely to find the best of the best, as that's something that you can find elsewhere. Here you're more likely to find the dregs of the movie world than anything else.

As to the name? It's actually from a song by The Kinks, and while it may or may not have anything to do directly with the movies, it does mention quite a few movie stars, and things that make you think about movies, and well, it just seemed appropriate. Hopefully you'll agree, and if not, I suspect it won't get in the way too much.

Thanks for visiting, enjoy your stay, and come back often.
